Video: Victoria Lindsay latest in UGC violence
Blowing up the online charts today is this video of Victoria Lindsay, a 16-year-old Florida cheerleader who was lured to a classmate's home, locked inside, and then beaten unconscious by several of her female classmates. The teens, all between the ages of 14 and 18, then posted the video to YouTube. They've since been charged with felony assault and unlawful imprisonment.
I think I'll bring up this type of user-generated content in July at the yPulse conference, where I'll be moderating a panel called "Leveraging User-Generated Content to Reach Youth". Maybe we should start another panel titled "Leveraging User-Generated Content to Put Youth in Jail." Or "Leveraging User-Generated Content to Convince Teens Not to Post User-Generated Content of Beatdowns". Or maybe "Kids: They Tend to Be Idiots".
Meanwhile, the sheriff of the county where the attack took place draws exactly the wrong conclusion: "It’s incumbent upon YouTube and MySpace to make drastic changes," Judd said. "If we desensitize kids to this kind of beating today, what’s next?"
Sigh. YouTube already deleted the video. And I hardly think curtailing free speech online is the answer to stopping teens from beating each other down. Perhaps, I don't know, investing in education might help? Complicated. Unsexy. True.

What these girls and boys did was unconscionable and disgusting. They should be punished to the maximum extent that the law allows, which will include lengthy prison sentences. I plan to personally contact the district attorney in that area with my thoughts and this matter and I guarantee there will be no leniency. These people will learn what “tough” is all about when they experience life in the general population. I hope it was worth it because their lives are effectively over.
With regard to civil matters, the families of these girls will also learn an important financial lesson as they will be cleaning out their bank accounts and selling their assets to compensate this poor girl. A lot of pain is coming their way and the value of teaching children right and wrong will be the cornerstone of this lesson.

When I saw the video of this poor girl getting beaten, I was angry. When I saw the mother of one of the girls that beat her on TV saying the police "blew it out of proportion", i became outraged. This woman has shown no concern for Victoria Lindsey while she is attempting to save her own daughter's skin. This woman is not doing her daughter any favors by justifying, downplaying and defending her daughter's actions. She is showing me that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I don't blame the internet, I blame these kids---all 8 of them for what happened to this girl. Parents need to quit pointing the finger at TV and their computer and start looking in the mirror. It starts at home people..Teach your kids right from wrong and show them that when they do something wrong, they have to face the music.

Wow, thats crazy what these kids did. I would have also charged them with attempted murder and kidnapping ontop of imprisonment and assault. I think the families of those girls and guys should get their whole life savings whipped out. I would keep going after them in civil court and press for harsher punishment in the juvenile and crime court! These kids have ruined that poor girls life. Now its the governments job to ruin theirs!
