Estelle Getty, YouTube Icon

By Andrew Wallenstein

I cannot get over the outpouring of grief on YouTube today over the death of Estelle Getty, one-fourth of "The Golden Girls." How an octogenarian from a 1980s sitcom manages to resonate with young people crying their hearts out like she was Miley Cyrus or something. Chalk it up to Lifetime reruns, I guess.

Still, it is hard to take seriously public mourning like the video above, which unintentionally veers dangerously close to Chris Crocker territory. No doubt his anguish is real, but can the same be said for all Getty fans? Just check out the Fred-voiced Ukelady, who clearly seems to be exploiting her memory to win the Bushman Ukulele Contest, which is extremely prestigious. For shame, woman, for shame.

Please, Estelle was the best...at a lot of things. Golden Girls was just the tip of the iceberg.

i was really saden to hear about estelle getty,s death she will always be rememberd as the wiscracking sophia patrillio from the golden girls . RIP ESTELLE GETTY

Getting torn up about the death of someone to whom you have no personal connection has to be a sign of psychological disturbance. Of course, I feel the same way about people who are depressed for 20 years when their animals die, so maybe I'm just heartless.
