Kanye West likes Absolut. . . or something
Another day, another tongue-in-cheek "viral" video from a celebrity. This time Kanye West jumps in the mix with a fake infomercial promoting Absolut Vodka. There's something a little off about this one, though.
It's hard to tell what it's even promoting. One could be forgiven for thinking that it's even an Alka-Seltzer ad. The only hints that it's actually vodka are the facts that the liquid is clear and Kanye mentions the "in an Absolut world" tagline at the end of the clip. The video also directs the viewer to BeKANYE.com, which continues the theme of lack of promotion. There's not even a link to Absolut's Web site. Again, just some "Absolut" wordplay thrown around to let you know what to spend your money on.
Finally, I expect more from Kanye. He definitely has his comedic timing down and there is a pretty cool tiger graphic, but for an artist that aims to amaze at every turn, he didn't really bring it for his turn as a viral video star.
Maybe I'm being too hard on Kanye. Any rapper filming something like this, has to live up to the gold standard in fake hip-hop infomercials, courtesy of the Beastie Boys circa 1998. Sure, these were shot at a simpler time--when a video could last for more than three minutes and people would still pay attention--and they were actually shown on cable TV, but c'mon, Kanye! At least throw on a pink sweater!
